Partners in Prevention Committee

The Issues and Planning Task Force of the McLean County Community Compact development a committee within the Compact to address and bring to the forefront, issues regarding prevention of drug abuse. The proposal specifically looked at prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse issues

The group has been involved in research of other appropriate models, development of goals for the group, and designing a time line and list of topics, which will be featured in workshops.

The Partners in Prevention Committee is active in several different ways. The traditional activities of this committee have been centered on offering workplace education and support to families as their children transition from one stage of growth to the next. Free, educational group experiences have been completed by over 300 employees throughout McLean County while on the job and offered to several other employers who are considering the benefits of the training for their staff. The Parent Project Curriculum was chosen as a basis for employers and employees to select from an array of options for individual sessions. Trainers were made available from BroMenn's Addiction Recovery Unit, Chestnut Health Systems, Project Oz, and University of Illinois Extension to cover topics selected by participants to increase their knowledge. Support groups became a very positive by-product of the informational trainings and many of the employee groups have continued meeting after the training sessions ended. Goals of Partners in Prevention were originally to offer knowledge-based information on current educational trends and problems for specific age groups and provide a discussion group for employees to share their ideas, problems and solutions to common issues. Also, the group seeks to offer solutions to problems that plague parents, and offer an opportunity for learning and sharing at work that will result in positive parenting for youth. These opportunities will decrease use of vacation, personal days, and sick days to deal with children's problems. This is a very positive aspect for the employer. Often employers are encouraged to sponsor this opportunity during the work day.
